whats some advice you can give someone who wants to get into spiritwork but doesn't know how and is frankly pretty scared to try? (cheap beginner equipment, beginner advice, who / what to look at first, what to avoid, and anything else)

Short Version
Well for one, I would definitely present to you in the most shameless plug ever *wink* looking at these info posts I’ve created:
Spirit Companionship 101
Warding 101
House Rules
Banishing 101
Co-existing 101
Nature Spirits 101
Nature Spirits 102Tools for Spirit Communication:
Just about any form of Divination, such as Tarot, Pendulum (definitely the easiest), Ouija boards (no it isn’t like in the movies, ouija boards don’t just some evil entities that want to kill you and your friends), Scrying. I’d say to start with pendulums since it’s the easiest way to communicate with spirits since it just swings to one side to indicate a ‘yes/no/maybe/no answer’ answer.
If you want to do a spirit attraction spell, which I would recommend doing over a conjure: Use a white candle, carve into it a sigil to attract [insert species], and let it burn through the sigil. It won’t control the amount of spirits attracted however, so put out the candle as quickly as possible once it has burned through the sigil.
Do NOT do a spirit attraction spell as an absolute beginner.
General Points
- DO practice warding from the beginning
- DO study as many resources about spirits, spiritwork, what red flags to look for when dealing with spirits saying they’re your friend/want to look after you, the pros and cons of getting into spiritwork, etc. as possible before even attempting to interact with spirits
- DO make sure to ask other more experienced spiritworkers for advice if you’re unsure about something
- DO start communicating with plant spirits first
- DO have a grasp on banishing
- DO make sure to be safe in everything that you do so you can feel safe and secure in your own home
- DON’T recklessly try to skip past learning how to ward/do protection magic first
- DON’T attempt conjuring/spirit attraction spells as a beginner
- DON’T attempt astral travel/projection as a beginner
- DON’T automatically start applying for spirit companions/custom conjures/reverse adoptions as a beginner
- DON’T automatically trust every spirit that you meet just as you wouldn’t automatically trust every person that you meet
- DON’T try to interact with species of spirits you learn about when a post explicitly says beginners shouldn’t interact with them
In-Depth Version
Now as for a 101 deep dive into beginner spiritwork, one of the first things you can do to be magically up to snuff is practice warding (especially if you’re completely new to warding). Warding is the perfect way of keeping yourself safe magically from attacks, intruders, and the like. Regardless of being a spiritworker, magical activity will attract spirits and if you’re a beginner and don’t want spirits coming through your house as they please until you’re up to par to really interact with them, you need to ward. You need to ward regardless, but in the beginning it’s especially important.
